Drowning

The drowning rate for Aboriginal children is three times higher than for non-Aboriginal children. To reduce these alarming statistics The Royal Life Saving Society Australia (WA Branch) has recently produced a video titled 'Watch Out for the Kids'. This five minute video is designed to educate parents and carers on the importance of supervising children around water. The video outlines the benefits of swimming as a physical activity, whilst highlighting the dangers of swimming unsupervised at pools and waterholes. Issues such as the effects of drinking alcohol and diving into shallow water are outlined. The importance of pool rules, learning resuscitation and health and hygiene aspects are also addressed.

The content of this video is relevant to all communities with an Aboriginal population: urban, rural and remote. Schools, health clinics, resource centres, Aboriginal Medical Services, and Health Workers Training College will find this a useful resource.
